The New I-64 Parent Committee Summary
The Highway 40 Parent Committee, which is geographically representative of the entire metropolitan area, has responded with resoundingly positive feedback. The committee has reported no significant issues with traffic, congestion or getting students to school on time. In most instances, traffic has not changed, and some have noted it has even been lighter than last year.
Metro has provided consistently reliable – and expanded – service (though there have been a couple of minor, isolated issues for students using Metro). Increased ridership with Metro has been instrumental in helping alleviate traffic on a wide scale throughout the region, and SLUH students have benefited from a unique partnership with Metro that offers us a Semester Pass.
After evaluating the impact of traffic and our current hours of operation, SLUH has decided to continue keeping the library open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Given the limited demand from students and the relative ease of the rush-hour returning home, the cafeteria and Rec Room will no longer be open from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
SLUH appreciates the feedback it has received from various members of its community. Moving forward, the school will remain open to your input. We will also monitor the impact of construction and remain flexible in our future planning.
In the words of one committee member, "So, since this is going so well, what do you say we just leave the highway shut down and split the half billion dollars between us (and SLUH, of course)? :)"
SLUH and the New I-64
Since the announcement of MoDOT's plan to reconstruct Highway 40, St. Louis University High School has been actively involved in planning for the project. In partnership with other significant institutions in the metropolitan area, SLUH participated and invested in a plan spearheaded by a consultant to collect data and provide specific recommendations to MoDOT.
SLUH has been pleased with construction progress to date and is committed to keeping its constituents informed of the latest project developments and road conditions. Regular contact with MoDOT will enable SLUH to learn about progress and plans. This information will be communicated to the SLUH community in a timely manner. For the most current updates, visit the Commuting Updates section.
SLUH has coordinated strategic planning meetings with constituent groups from various geographical areas to assist in the planning process. As details on the construction project become available, SLUH will be making appropriate adjustments to its operation in order to lessen the impact on its community. Some adjustments include:
- Through ongoing dialogue and collaboration with Metro, SLUH is excited to provide a semester pass exclusively for its students at a significantly reduced rate of $125.00 as part of a pilot program. Visit the Metro Services section for further details and important Metro route information.
- SLUH will maintain flexibility with the academic schedule to accommodate the construction's impact.
- In order to increase access to its campus and alleviate traffic on Oakland Avenue, SLUH has opened entrances from Manchester Road and Macklind Avenue.
Part of what makes SLUH such a fine institution is its distinctive city location and partnerships with notable institutions in the area. Coupled with its exceptional program, these attributes will outweigh the temporary inconvenience. The redevelopment of I-64 will enhance SLUH's position as a primary school of choice for young men in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
