SLUH and the New I-64
Since the announcement of MoDOT's plan to reconstruct I-64, St. Louis University High School has been actively engaged in planning for the project in partnership with other significant institutions in the metropolitan area. While the initial phase of construction on the western portion of I-64 has proceeded rather smoothly, SLUH is committed to alleviating the impact of the New I-64 project on its community for the final project phase through creative planning and timely communication.
Construction progress has already made travel near SLUH easier and more efficient. Completion of the new Kingshighway bridge has improved traffic flow. Even with the increased traffic volume on Kingshighway, travel times for the road have remained the same. In addition, the redevelopment of Oakland Avenue has improved aesthetics on SLUH's doorstep, but more importantly has enhanced safety for both commuters and pedestrians.
As MoDOTs project plan has evolved, the easternmost point of construction for the final phase changed from Sarah St. to Kingshighway (which is west of Sarah St.). This is impacting positively commuters coming from the east, including Illinois, as they are able to travel directly to and from Kingshighway, as opposed to alternative routes farther east of SLUH, such as Vandeventer and Chouteau.
What is SLUH Doing?
While SLUH was thorough in its planning for the initial construction phase, it has not yet needed to make significant adjustments to its operation to better cope with the project. However, SLUH is not underestimating the effect of the final construction phase and is prepared to implement a contingency plan if needed.
Moving forward, SLUH will continue to be proactive in a number of areas:
SLUH already began each school day with Activity Period for an entire week to help students and families adapt to the eastern closure of I-64/40 when that construction commenced. Homeroom began at 8:39 a.m. As usual, the school and library were open at 6:30 a.m. with food service available for those arriving early.
An exclusive, ongoing partnership with Metro will continue to benefit SLUH students with a Semester Pass opportunity, providing a significant savings.
Enhanced access to SLUH’s campus will continue to streamline nearby traffic by keeping open entry/exit points on Manchester Ave. (at East Rd.) and Macklind Ave. (at Wise Ave.)
A geographically diverse parent committee will continue to provide input to SLUH as the school makes decisions and adjustments as needed.
Regular contact with MoDOT will continue to keep constituents informed of the latest project progress and plans. This Web site provides the most current updates and resources via the various sub-sections on the left navigation bar.
Part of what makes SLUH such a fine institution is its distinctive city location and partnerships with notable institutions in the area. Coupled with its exceptional program, these attributes will outweigh the temporary inconvenience. The redevelopment of I-64 will enhance SLUH’s position as a leading school of choice for young men in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
