History

The Community Service Program at St. Louis University High School has a long and vigorous history. It stems from the Society of Jesus' response to the Second Vatican Council's challenge to renew the Society according to the spirit of the Church in the Modern World (following the Second Vatican Council) and to recommit their institutions to the promotion of faith and justice. One of the many outcomes of this commitment at the high school level was the development of service programs for students.
While the Thirty-Second General Congregation provided the immediate impetus for the development of Jesuit community service programs, SLUH's program is grounded in the tradition of the social teaching of the Catholic Church. This long tradition emphasizes the importance of the Church's presence and Christian action in the social, political, economic and cultural spheres.
"The expectation of a new earth must not weaken but rather stimulate our concern for cultivating this one." (Gaudium et Spes, #39)
