Latin Club

SLUH students wear their victory smiles after sweeping the Certamen competition in 2005.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Latin Club was started in 1981-82 with a membership of 40 students. Since then, the club typically attracts over 100 members each year. The purpose of the club is to promote Latin, and for the students to have fun. Highlights of the year include the election of club officers at which candidates spend considerable amounts of money on a veritable plethora of enticements to coax voters to cast their ballots in their favor, the Saturnalia (a toga party that includes SLUH, Cor Jesu, Nerinx, Ursuline and St. Joseph's), and the Missouri Junior Classical League State Latin Convention to which SLUH sends a delegation to participate in the Certamen competition (a Quiz Bowl-type of academic competition). The motto of the club is "Edamus Bibamus Guadeamus."

Salvete discipuli! This spring has been an exciting time for the Latin and Greek students who have participated in a plethora of state and national tests. On the National Latin Exam SLUH had 33 students who earned gold medals and Summa Cum Laude certificates, 34 winners of silver medals and Maxima Cum Laude certificates and 20 students who earned Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude certificates. There were also two students - Todd Swift (senior) and Nate Fox (sophomore) who achieved perfect scores. Two seniors - Dan Hrdlicka and Todd Swift had earned gold medals on the NLE all 4 years and were awarded a gift of the Oxford Classical Dictionary by the NLE committee.
Of the 23 seniors who took the National Greek Exam, 2 students earned blue (highest honors) ribbons, 7 earned red (high honors) ribbons and 5 earned green (high merit) ribbons - a remarkable feat for first year Greek students!
Six students participated in the Medusa Mythology Exam - senior Todd Swift earned a perfect score and received a gift from the exam committee, senior Stephen Quinn earned a bronze medal and the other 4 students earned certificates of honor.
On the state written tests, sponsored by the Missouri Junior Classical League there were 7 first place gold trophy winners , 8 silver medal winners, 7 bronze medal winners in areas as diverse as Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Derivatives, History and Culture and Mythology. In addition to the state written tests SLUH students participated in the Certamen competition (a quiz bowl style contest) at the MOJCL Convention held in Columbia, Mo. on April 28. Both the Varsity (senior-junior) and the Freshman Dream Teams won first place in the state, bringing home trophies and gold medals. It was a great day for the SLUH teams and the students are already planning their strategy for next year’s contest!
Overall it has been a great year for the Classics students at SLUH - they have worked hard and their work has resulted in a myriad of honors and awards. I look forward to another fine year in ‘07-’08 when our students prove that Lingua Latina (et lingua Graeca) vivit!
