Sisyphus

General Information:

Sisyphus, the St. Louis U. High Magazine of Literature and Art, now in its twenty-seventh year of publication, aims to promote good writing and artwork in the SLUH community and to give that community a chance to appreciate the fine work being done in the school.

Twice each year, in February and May, Sisyphus publishes stories, poems, personal essays, drawings, and photographs from students, teachers, and staff at SLUH.

Students (and staff members) wishing to submit their work should deliver it to the SLUH English Department office.

The literary editors (Joe Milner, Tim Nesmith, Alex Orf, Joe Lauth, Dave Spitz, & Kingsley Uwalaka) select the manuscripts, which are considered anonymously. The Art Editors (Tyler Pey & Matt Anderson) gather and select the artwork. Jim Santel lays out the magazine. Frank Kovarik & Rich Moran are the moderators. As English teachers, these moderators are indebted to their colleagues in English and Fine Arts, who coach students to write and draw, and to Matt Sciuto, who beats the drum for photography at SLUH.

In the coming months, we expect to publish past and present issues of the magazine online.

Sisyphus takes its name from the Greek hero whom the gods consigned to an unending cycle of rolling a massive stone up a hill, only to watch it roll down again. Appreciating the satisfaction that comes of human labor (including, we think, the labor that leads to art), Albert Camus wrote that “One must imagine Sisyphus happy."
