Waterpolobills Make Big Splash, Again

The SLUH varsity water polo team earned its fourth consecutive state championship on May 16th at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters, defeating second-seeded DeSmet 9-4. The Jr. Bills, which wrapped up a 30-1 season, advanced to the finals by routing Chaminade 16-4 on May 15th.

John Savio '09 scored three goals for SLUH, and William Page '09 and Will Derdeyn '09 scored two apiece. John Heafner '09, the team’s leading scorer, and Steve Sigman '09 each scored one goal. Goalie Matt Hohenberger '09 protected the net for the Jr. Bills.

"They earned it," says coach Paul Baudendistel. "This championship was the product of these seniors' work over the past three months, and in the cases of several players, over the past six years. There were a lot of early mornings, long days, and late nights, but I think they would agree that it was all worth it. Talent plus dedication is a wonderful combination."

"This year's senior class is among the most talented to ever go through the water polo program, but also among the hardest working," says assistant coach John Penilla. "They pushed themselves for the last four years not just to win, but to become the best water polo players they could be. Together with the juniors and sophomores on this year's team, the team was able to achieve nearly all the goals they set for themselves and write their names into the rich history of SLUH water polo."

The SLUH water polo team has now earned 14 state championships in its history, the most ever for any school in the area.
