SLUH Hosts Festival of Miles

History was made on the evening of Saturday, May 23rd on SLUH’s campus. The first sub 4-minute mile in Missouri since 1963 was run at the second annual Big River Festival of Miles. The event raised much-needed support for Mike Rathmann, a track athlete who suffered a spinal cord injury after graduating from SLUH in 2008.

Hundreds of spectators and Rathmann supporters filled the bleachers at SLUH’s track facility. They were on hand for nine races, highlighted by a celebrity 100-yard dash and a men’s elite mile.

Three men broke the 4-minute barrier for the mile race. Leo Manzano, 2008 U.S. Olympian in the 1,500 meters, finished in 3:55.29. This is the third fastest time in the world in the mile this year. CLICK HERE to watch the race.

SLUH track coach Jim Linhares finished third in the celebrity 100-yard dash, which featured local media personalities.

The Big River Festival of Miles began last year to support Brigette Schutzman, a standout cross country and track athlete at Saint Louis University who sustained a traumatic brain injury. This year, the event was held to support both Schutzman and Rathmann.
