Seniors Return from Service Projects

The senior class learned some important lessons in January, even though they did not attend classes for nearly the entire month. Just as importantly, they made an impact on the community – locally and abroad – by participating in a 39-year-old tradition known as Senior Project.

Each year, SLUH seniors put aside their academic studies for the month to work full-time as community volunteers as part of Senior Project. The experience is an attempt to help them become more sensitive and responsive to the needs of others, kindling in them understanding, hope, compassion and faith.

This year the tradition continued as seniors set out on a journey of service and self-discovery on January 4th. Two hundred fifty-seven seniors assisted the elderly, the handicapped, the poor and many others by contributing nearly 30,000 service hours at 68 different sites throughout the metropolitan area and beyond in Honduras and Africa. In doing so, the students learned more about themselves and the importance of service in unfamiliar and challenging situations.

"It was a great experience to visit the clinic in Yoro where our seniors have been going the last 16 or so years," says Nick Ehlman, Senior Project coordinator who joined Charlie Merriott's group for one week in Honduras.

"The seniors care for malnourished children, and the biggest impact the trip had on me was the reminder of the role that poverty and hunger have on so many people around the world. Through the relationships that the seniors create with the children at the clinic, they witness this poverty and hunger firsthand. These are the type of intense experiences that change people's lives and encourage them to live lives of service and justice."

With the successful conclusion of this year’s Senior Project, the entire student body attended a special prayer service on January 29th in honor of the seniors who returned from their service work on January 28th.

Senior Project began at SLUH in 1971 and has since spread to other Catholic schools in the area. Many alumni report that their experience in Senior Project influenced choices they made in college, and even career paths.
