Ed Macauley ’45 Makes MVC All-Century Team

The Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) has announced its all-centennial men's basketball team in celebration of its 100th anniversary. Ed Macauley, a 1945 SLUH graduate and the youngest player ever inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1960 at age 32, received ample votes to earn a spot on the star-studded team.

Macauley, who played with St. Louis University (1946-49), was part of the NIT Champion team in 1948 and named AP Player of the Year in 1949. He went on to play in the NBA with the St. Louis Hawks (1949-50, 1956-59) and the Boston Celtics (1950-56). Among his professional career highlights, Macauley was MVP of the first NBA All-Star Game in 1951, scored 11,234 career points (17.5 ppg) in 641 games, and led the 1958 NBA Championship St. Louis Hawks team.

He was nicknamed "Easy" Ed Macauley because of his graceful style, gliding down the lanes for effortless layups and pinpoint hook shots.

Macauley joins the following as members of the all-century team: Oscar Robertson (Cincinnati, 1957-60), Larry Bird (Indiana State, 1976-79), Hersey Hawkins (Bradley, 1984-88), Xavier McDaniel (Wichita State, 1981-85). The all-centennial coach is Henry Iba, who coached Oklahoma State (then Oklahoma A&M) from 1934 to 1957.
