Jr. Bills Add Up to Success in Math Tournament

St. Louis University High School placed third in the St. Charles Community College Math Club's annual Area High School Math Tournament on March 3rd at SCC. Five students represented the Jr. Billikens among 19 high schools and 120 students from the area.

Quinn Thames earned first place in the 9th Grade Target and Sprint Rounds; Mike Baumer placed fifth in the 11th Grade Sprint Round; and Dan Viox finished first in the Spring Round and fourth in the Target Round for 12th Grade. SLUH placed second in the overall team test competition; the team was represented by Mike Baumer, Tommy Davidson, Mike Rauschenbach, Quinn Thames and Dan Viox.

"We are very competitive in state math competitions. The students who represent SLUH are very enthusiastic about mathematics," says Dan See, math teacher and moderator of SLUH's math club. "They seem to especially enjoy the team portions of the competitions. The students who represent us at the competitions are a small part of the mathematical talent present here. I'd like to get more students to a math competition."

Other schools participating in the tournament, held in cooperation with the Great Plains Math League, included: Christian High, Fort Zumwalt West, Glasgow, Governor French, Hickman, Lindbergh, Lutheran North, Lutheran South, Mary Institute and Country Day School, McCluer North, Mehlville, Nerinx Hall, Notre Dame, Parkway South, Rock Bridge, St. Dominic, Trinity, and Wentzville-Timberland. Rock Bridge and Hickman earned first- and second-place school honors, respectively.
