Maj. Brad Downs ’92 Honored for Valor

Maj. Brad Downs, a 1992 SLUH graduate, has been nominated to receive a top United States Air Force award for a daring re-supply mission he piloted in southern Afghanistan on September 1, 2006. He will be presented the Cheney Award at the Pentagon on November 7th.

Downs, accompanied by Maj. Daniel Roesch on a modified C-130 transport, demonstrated exceptional aviation skills during the nighttime mission to re-supply special operations forces on the ground. The mission was accomplished at low speed and low altitude, significantly increasing vulnerability to attack.

Downs’ courage and leadership on this dangerous mission ensured pinpoint drop-delivery of 22,000 pounds of food, water and ammunition within 10 meters of the intended target. The slightest error would have ensured enemy control of these crucial supplies.

The mission saved the lives of the special operations forces and was a breaking point for Taliban morale and determination.

Downs attended the Air Force Academy after graduating from SLUH. He helped lead the SLUH water polo team to a state title, and was a three-time Academic All-American water polo player at the Air Force Academy.

The Cheney Award is presented annually by the United States Air Force for an act of valor, extreme fortitude or self-sacrifice in a humanitarian interest. It is named in memory of 1st Lt. William Cheney, who was killed in an air collision over Italy in 1918, and was established in 1927.
