Jr. Bills Retain Volleyball Title

The St. Louis University High School volleyball squad overcame a devastating loss in the first game of the Class 4 championship match against Lafayette on May 15th to earn a hard-fought, well-deserved title victory. This achievement marks the second consecutive year SLUH has won the state title and the fifth overall title in school history.

"I'm really proud of the poise our players showed in coming back after losing that grueling first game," says coach Terry Quinn. "A lot of teams would have lost heart, but we had guys out there who were playing in their third state final, guys that know what it's like to have to focus on your serve with a thousand people screaming at you."

Though the Lancers (31-2-1) won first game 36-34, which featured 22 ties and eight lead changes, the Jr. Bills (29-2) regained their composure and struck back with 25-16 and 25-20 victories that clinched the title. Anthony Hock '08 recorded a game-high 14 kills; Michael Adams '09 had 11 kills; John Swanston '09 had 34 assists; and Rudy Brynac '09 racked up seven kills (one of which ended the match in the final game).

"We had a few shakey moments, but we didn't break," says Quinn. "Guys like John Swanston, Pete Hock and Mike Adams came through with big games. Jack Hughes poured his heart into the match. And, of course, our fans were incredible."
