Water Polo Team Three-Peats
The St. Louis University High School water polo squad polished off a perfect season (26-0) by defeating Chaminade 7-3 in the Missouri District Tournament championship game on May 17th at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters. The previous night the Jr. Bills beat Marquette 12-4 en route to their third consecutive title and thirteenth overall in school history.
"We have some terrific individual players, and they're even better as a team, but what impresses me the most is their focus,” says coach Paul Baudendistel. “They haven't played many close games over the past couple years, but they consistently push themselves and each other to improve."
Though Chaminade jumped to an early 2-0 lead, the Jr. Bills’ talent and determination ultimately proved overwhelming for the Red Devils. Senior Tim Dale, the Suburban Central League player of the year, led the comeback by scoring SLUH’s first three goals. Junior William Page tallied two goals in the second half to help solidify SLUH’s victory.
"It must be gratifying for Charlie Busenhart that of three of the final four head coaches were former players: me (1990), Tom Milford (2000) at Chaminade, and Miguel Figueras (1989) at DeSmet," says Baudendistel. "And so were two of the assistant coaches, John Penilla (1999) and Doug Maitz (1996) at DeSmet."
Busenhart preceded Baudendistel as SLUH's water polo coach and earned the school eight water polo titles.
SLUH’s championship victory was their 57th consecutive win, dating back to the 2005 season. Up until this game, they had won every game this season by at least four points.
