Alumni Give Back

Sixty alumni gathered on the morning of Saturday, May 2nd to reflect, reconnect and give back to the community. The third annual Alumni Day of Service has fast become a tradition at the U. High, providing an opportunity for graduates to actively engage the “man for others” ideal through service to others.

This year, five organizations in the metropolitan area benefited from the generosity of SLUH alumni. They included Boys Hope Girls Hope, Loyola Academy, Our Little Haven, St. Cecilia’s Parish and South Grand Senior Ministry.

Alumni from various class years kicked off the day with Mass in the SLUH Chapel, then gathered in the Currigan Room for socializing before departing for several hours of service work. Projects undertaken by alumni ranged in scope from painting and yard work, to miscellaneous maintenance and cleaning chores.

“I’m proud to continue the SLUH tradition of building a future for the young ‘men for others’ of Loyola Academy,” says Peter Palumbo ’91, who helped coordinate the service activity at Loyola.

Loyola Academy of St. Louis, which recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary, aims to serve boys who have the potential for college preparatory work, but who are in danger of failing to achieve that potential because of poverty, residence in distressed neighborhoods, or other social or economic factors.

All SLUH alumni are invited to continue this worthwhile tradition next year. Details will be posted on the Web site and in SLUH News when the 2010 date is announced.
