Volleybills Excel in NCAA

Former Junior Billiken volleyball standouts Kevin Heine ’06 and Murphy Troy ’07 are continuing their outstanding performance at the college level. Troy, a sophomore at USC, has been named an All-American first teamer, and Heine, an Ohio State Buckeye, recently earned most valuable player honors. Both players have propelled their teams into the Final Four of the NCAA Championship Tournament.

"They always handled their exceptional talent with humilty and class," says SLUH Athletic Director Dick Wehner. "They were everything you would want in how a high profile scholar/athlete should represent their high school."

Troy, a physics major, is the first USC student-athlete to earn Division I-II All-American first team honors since 2000. He recently played a key role in helping USC earn its first-ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament title for the Trojans’ first NCAA Championship Tournament appearance since 1991. In just his second season, he has already garnered several distinguished awards for his play and could rank among the top athletes in the collegiate game. As a Junior Bill, Troy was instrumental in leading SLUH to win the 2007 Missouri Class 4 State Volleyball championship.

Heine (MIVA All-Academic, Academic All-Big Ten) was recognized for his play in helping 10th-ranked Ohio State win the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament with a sweep of Ball State. He posted 11.5 points with seven kills, two solo blocks and five assist blocks. The victory advanced the Buckeyes to the NCAA National Semifinals.

Fourth-seeded Ohio State squares off against #1 UCI in the NCAA Championship Semi-Finals on May 7 at BYU. (Pete Hock '08 is also on the Ohio State team.) The game will be preceded by #3 USC versus #2 Penn State.
